Minicoy is the second largest and the southernmost among the islands of the Lakshadweep archipelago. This atoll is administered under the Indian Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Nine Degree Channel separates Minicoy and the Laccadive Islands. The closest island to Minicoy is Thuraakunu in the Republic of the Maldives. Maliku Kandu is the traditional name of the broad channel between Minicoy (Maliku) and Ihavandippulhu (Haa Alif Atoll) in the Maldives. In the Admiralty Charts it is called Eight Degree Channel. The island was historically part of the Maldives group, and its name, "Maliku" reflects its close ties to the Maldives. This historical influence is still evident in its unique culture, language, and social customs, which are distinct from other Lakshadweep islands.
After arrival your dream Island, transfer to your accommodation at Minicoy Island. Enjoy with your welcome drink and check-in yourΒ accommodation and relax.
After lunch, we start our dream island tour, through the Minicoy village, the main attraction of the island is its carefully arranged villages, known as βAvahβ. Each Avah has its own internal organization headed by a Moopan, around which the life of the community rests.Every Village has its own
village house. In total there are 10 villages in the island, and are named as Bada, Aoumagu, Boduathiri, Rammedu, Sedivalu, Aloodi, Funhilol, Kudehi, Falessery and Kendiparty (from south to north). Each village is headed by a Bodukaka and a Bodudatha assisted by a 2nd Bodukaka and a 2nd bodudatha. First Bodukaka looks after the internal matters of the village and 2nd Bodukaka the external affairs. Village house is the place where βBaemeduβ (Assemblage of villagers) is held. As source of income a village has fishing boats, country crafts and coconut trees. Common feasts are conducted at the village house during the celebrations of Eid and other festive occasions. Minicoy being the only people in India speaking Mahal as a linguistic minority. The language closely related to Dhivehi a member of Indo-Aryan language family which is official language of Maldives. No Indian language is mutually intelligible to this. Even for people from other islands of Lakshadweep itβs not intelligible.
